ARTIFACT SHARE

Students should bring in an artifact belonging to their family and share the history of the artifact using oral tradition.  Please take special care when deciding what you bring.  Special arrangements should be made if the artifact is very valuable, delicate or easily broken, or if it presents a safety risk to the student and their classmates.  The school will not be responsible for lost or damaged items.  If the artifact falls into one of these categories students can have a parent, grandparent, or guardian bring the artifact in or they can take a picture and bring it in.  Any artifact that could be deemed as a weapon or could hurt someone must have prior approval by Mr. Herlocker and Mr. Heatherly and must be checked in through the office.  The family story and a description of how and why the artifact was used should be the key points covered in the students presentation of the artifact.  The real goal of the project is for students to “connect” with previous generations and find out how life has changed over the lifetime of their parents, grandparents, and previous generations.  Hopefully history will come alive for the students and they will find out information and stories that they did not know before.  The older the artifact the better, but the family story of who, what, when, where, how, and why is the most important part.  Any funny or amusing anecdotes about family are encouraged.  This is one of my favorite projects because if the students complete it correctly they hopefully gain an appreciation for history and their personal family story.

The artifact should be:
-at least 20 years old
-belong to a family member or close family friend
-something that was once very popular but now is not used or has been replaced or upgraded

Grading of artifact share:
50 points Presentation:  This should include who, what, when, where, how, and why:
-Story of how artifact was used
-Age of artifact
-Family stories behind and related to how it came into family, how family used it, price then and now, etc
25 points Artifact that meets criteria above
25 points  PAPER that include all information in presentation
